Dear Loved One,
Knowing what your non-negotiables are can save more than just your business. Especially when you’re struggling with overwhelm or feelings of indecision.
Your non-negotiables are those areas of your life that you won’t compromise on. These are the things you need to do to maintain minimum levels of wellbeing.
It isn’t an option to sacrifice them. So they’re something that goes straight in the diary before anything else creeps in there.
The top three non-negotiables that keep me sane, centred and excited and support me to rise above the pressure are:
- Sleep: at least 8 hours a night minimum. Research has shown that chronic sleep deprivation leads to decreased performance and alertness, memory and cognitive impairment, stress and higher risk of car accidents. I’ve always needed sleep – more rather than less is always preferable. It’s an extreme challenge for me (and many new mothers) to experience sleep deprivation especially when my sons were small. I was incredibly thankful when they started sleeping through. Nowadays, if the sleep fairies aren’t coming, a chamomile tea usually works like magic.
- Exercise: regular exercise is a non-negotiable. Without it, focus, clarity and resilience are harder to find. Swimming laps at least 3 times a week and doing some slow vinyasa yoga are two ways I love to honour my body’s need for this essential ingredient. Movement and exercise bring the quality of grace and alignment to my life which has a ripple effect that benefits all areas of my business.
- Quality time with my sons: sometimes I can’t believe my boys are growing up as fast as they are. One of the most important parts of my life is making time to be with them and to really focus on being present. This is far more important than ‘getting ahead’ in work. One of the biggest rewards I get for working hard, is the opportunity to go on high quality breaks with my sons. A huge bonus I celebrate about running my own ship is that I can make myself available for school pick-ups and set my hours. Entrepreneurship is hard work but the rewards are worth it, especially when you get to choose the hours that suit you and your loved ones.
This week, list your top three non-negotiables in the comments section below. Make sure they’re in your diary and look forward to the luxury of enjoying them now that they’re ‘legitimate’ parts of your schedule.

Thanks Lisa for this blog post- I realised reading it that I really need to make time for non negotiables and it was scary to think of all the things i put work before which really should definitely be more important- so here are my non negotiables
1. meditation- either in the morning or half way through a 16 hour working day
2. making time to take a real break- planning it and writing it in my dairy and do not cancel because a job comes in.
3. taking time to meet up with friends and not just feel connected because of social media
hi Veet, thanks so much for stopping by. I especially love your mention of social media – it’s not quite the same as taking time to meet up in person isn’t it? I love the fact that you’ve reinforced your non-negotiables. Well done and wishing you peace in your rest, meditation and friendship time, namaste Lisa
