So often I hear clients speak of what they’d like to do when they finally pluck up the courage.

‘I’ll do it when I feel brave,’ they say

‘I just need to do one more training course before I’ll be ready,’ they say

‘I need a few more months/years to perfect things before I do it,’ they say

Meanwhile, the world shifts on its axis and the seasons change.

The moon rises and falls and a year passes.

Nothing has changed in their lives or businesses, the way they hoped it would.

The courage hasn’t shown up yet and they are still waiting for the right time to ‘exercise it’.

The truth is that courage is like a muscle.

It needs regular exercise in order to stay strong and to grow.

True leaders understand this.

Leaders have made an important decision to flex the muscles of courage, to keep them strong and supple. They have stared down the barrel of some of their greatest fears. Fears like ‘what if I don’t make it in my business?’ ‘what if I am humiliated?’ ‘What if my book doesn’t sell after all the work I’ve put into it?’ ‘what if no one signs up for my services?’

They’ve faced their fears, and worse. Then they’ve made an important decision to leap.

To commit to their business, boots and all.

I understand what this feels like.

Taking a quantum leap when I started my coaching business took every bit of courage I had. I had no back door. I was responsible for my two sons and needed to make sure they were going to be ok when I took the leap. I didn’t have enough courage to throw myself into my business full-time so I held onto a bridging job for a while. A long while. Longer than I needed to.

It wasn’t until I learnt that courage comes from taking brave, warrior-like action that I let go and made a decision to pour my heart into my business. I had no clue how I was going to support my children if it didn’t work. I had some lean weeks and tons of self doubt.

It paid off, in greater ways than I could have imagined.

Today I have a business that I love with all my heart.

My coaching business surprises, delights, nourishes, ignites and uplifts me every day.

My clients are the kind of women who constantly inspire, delight, uplift and ignite the world with their work. They have a legacy to leave and they’re determined as heck to make sure they leave their eco-print and heart-markers on the planet through their services.

They are true warrior goddesses in business. I can’t think of anything I’d like to do more than serve them. It is through their work in the world that I feel like I’m making a difference.

So back to you and your courage.

How do you know when you’re being called to action?

You know, because you know. You’ve been called to act on behalf of your calling for such a long time, and perhaps you’ve become accustomed to saying no. The heroine usually refuses the call because she doesn’t believe that she has what it takes to see it through.

I know you have got what it takes.

Or perhaps you heard the call and embarked on your business adventure and have somehow found yourself feeling scared again, because the next level is awaiting you?

I know you have got what it takes.

I know, because you are just like me. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t.

Your mission is a lot like mine too – it’s to leave a legacy. It’s to leave the world a better place through your actions in your business. It’s to live a fearless life using the might of your own heart.

That doesn’t mean you don’t get scared from time to time, we all do.

It means that you are exercising your muscle of courage regularly – doing high and medium risk things in your business that stretch you beyond your comfort zone every day. Some of these things give you the heebeejeebees. You know what? If you don’t feel the heebeejeebees a couple of times a month, your business won’t grow.

I could never have come to a place where I love my business so much if I hadn’t had the coaches and the support I needed to face my own personal heebeejeebees. They’re different for all of us. I love getting in front of people to speak – some people don’t.

I love getting in front of clients and having discovery sessions – some people don’t.

I love teaching workshops – some people don’t.

I get the total heebeejeebees thinking about approaching new people to partner with (I’m easily intimidated). I also get the heebeejeebees when it comes to any kind of photography, videography or moving footage. (If my coach hadn’t given me the JFDI policy, just f’n do it, I would never have had my photos done or made any videos). The more I go towards those fears, the more my business and my confidence has grown.

I’ve condensed everything I’ve learnt into my one:one coaching program – Heart Your Business. I’ve wasted a lot of time, energy and money over my years in business (including over 7 years in my international yoga workshop and teaching business during which I had no list and no online presence and still managed to survive through the power of self-belief and sheer determination – not a recommended strategy by the way, but I learnt a ton about what makes a successful and sustainable service based business along the way). I’ve included everything I’ve learnt through my coaching diploma, business certification and through sheer sweat and gruel setting up my own coaching business online. I developed Heart Your Business for you if you are an aware and heart-centred intelligent woman and you already have an existing service-based business and have lost some love and a little of your courage. You need to get your business mojo on. Right now.

This 6 month program will show you how to fall in love with your business again, for more time, energy, sustainability and the all important one – abundance.

If this calls you, and you’re ready to face your heebeejeebees so you can find your crazy, passion-fuelled place amongst the visionary leaders of this world, you belong with me.

How did you know I needed this? I have been dilly-dallying over my first book for God alone knows how long? At the beginning of this year, I set myself an end-of-2014 deadline, and here we are in August, and I still haven’t picked up the courage to move a step further. The blank page is a frightening thing.
Maybe I’ll push myself into writing 100 words today. Who knows where that might lead?

    • Lisa on August 5, 2014 at 7:28 am

hi Cynthia, I would be so excited to know that you have written your first 100 words. It’s not too late to meet your deadline! Don’t hesitate to let me know if you require support – I have been down the book writing journey and it’s so much more achievable when you have an accountability coach. Namaste, Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

I don’t have a business yet – still trying to figure out what I could offer to people if anythig – but I do love your post. All you have said about the courage applies to every single step I take. When I started, I wouldn’t even blog under my own name for the fear of a ridiculous flop. Then I thought – what the heck, there is nothing wrong with my name, why waste my energy on creating some ‘alter ego’? So I, too, took a leap. It literally felt like closing my eyes and jumping off somewhere. I moved out of Blogger and set up my own website. Still a long way to go, but I know I will get there. I’ve only just discovered I can have a voice. Thank you for inspiration, Lisa 🙂

hi Beata, thanks so much for stopping by. That’s such an inspiration that you’ve found your voice. Your quantum leap to self-expression is brave and very exciting. Best of luck with your writing. It’s often what we fear most that points us in the direction of our greatest achievements. Keep going! Namaste and love, Lisa

I really appreciated this article. It reminds me of the Ray Bradbury quote, “Living at risk, means jumping off the cliff and building your wings on the way down.”

I might not go quite so radical, but the basic idea is sound. You only grow when you meet challenges that force growth. You can take measured steps as you describe in how you made your transition, while keeping your salaried job while you built your passion job. But one way or another, some risk is always involved if we are to expand.

    • Lisa on August 9, 2014 at 2:43 am

thanks Indigo, it’s true that we must decide what is right for us – whether we’ll take a more calculated risk or a more radical one. I love supporting women to decide their own pace and their own authentic truth in their business building process. Lovely to have you stopping by and thank you.

Wow! This is such a true article. Courage is necessary but sometimes fear gets the better of us. Glad you’re showing the way for so many of us women. Keep it up!

hi Terezia, thanks so much for your encouragement – I appreciate you stopping by and I love the work you’re doing in the world, regards, Lisa
