Are You Kidding Yourself? {Are you a genius or a deluded mad-woman?}

It’s not uncommon to hear multi-talented, big vision women declaring their dreams of making a difference only to turn around and ask the question – ‘am I deluding myself?’
They have caught glimpses of the palace, only to dart right back into the servant’s quarters.
They have seen what might be possible, if only for a moment, only to let realism win.
They have been seized with inspiration for a mission that they know only they are able to carry out, only to talk themselves around to a more secure and more soul sapping option.
Quite often the voice that talks them around doesn’t even belong to them.
It’s the voice of their realistic father, mother, brother or friend.
It belongs to their ancestral line of grandmothers and great grandmothers who didn’t think it was possible for women to do what they are now dreaming of doing.
It belongs to their societal, cultural and familial norms that have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
It talks them out of their deep bone wisdom and into something more safe, more mainstream and more befitting of their current station. It talks them into a life of quiet regret and desperation. It stops them from taking risks that might change things for others who are equally restless with their visions trapped inside them.
Yet be warned!
A life of regret is one that was lived according to everyone else’s wishes and expectations.
A life well lived is one where you have made a choice to put yourself in charge.
Choosing life means choosing to live independently of those outside influences and in accordance with your deepest heart-felt truth. What feels right for you will not always feel comfortable but it will bring more life through you. When you’re living in alignment with what’s true for you, you can stand in tadasana (mountain pose) and find your authentic voice in any situation. When you’re living out of alignment with what’s true for you, you’ll find there are parts of you that want to quietly hide away, wither, not be seen and not fully show up.
The question to ask when the voices pipe up and say ‘Are you kidding yourself mad-woman?’ is ‘who does this belong to?’ Who is anyone else to tell you what you are here to do, brave lady? In a world full of unhealthy paradigms and covert inequality, it may even be that you’re the only sane one in the room sometimes! Have you ever considered the fact that you are a leader because you are daring to think differently, be different, show up on your own terms and do things your way? That means you might be the first in your town – to offer yoga-dance, to open a healing arts studio, to write that book about revolutionary practices for women but that’s exactly what is needed to move the needle and make changes that are desperately needed in a world that needs you and your ideas more than ever.
Sending you all the courage you need to start inhabiting the palace and living your mission statement loved one.

“When you’re living out of alignment with what’s true for you, you’ll find there are parts of you that want to quietly hide away, wither, not be seen and not fully show up.” I know this one too well. I am working on dis-mantling it so I move forward more easily with my new projects that I know will bring me validation and greater confidence. Plus, it should help others in a similar position.
hi Virginia, I’m so pleased to hear that – you’re doing the work and it sounds like it has positive benefits for everyone you come into connection with. Thanks so much for stopping by xx
So spot on again Lisa!
Thanks so much Jeanette – I so appreciate you stopping by and I think you definitely fall into the category of genius and are far from Madwoman! xx
Lisa, wow! You have hit the nail on its head. Powerful, powerful words. And very, very true. What I love most about this post is that you shed light on the fact that it isn’t even your own voice talking you out of your dream.
Just the other day I wrote a post called ‘ Who is going to help you manifest your soul desire?’ And how that harsh inner voice kills the dream before it even has the chance to find fertile soil.
I love your post and your presence. Am sharing this for sure 🙂
thanks so much for sharing Nadia, I’m so grateful for your positive and beautiful feedback. Many blessings to you, love Lisa
Love this line: “Have you ever considered the fact that you are a leader because you are daring to think differently, be different, show up on your own terms and do things your way” We forget that being a leader is by definition, making you different. Pursuing what your heart and soul is crying for you to do is really the only thing you can do.
thanks Teri, I love that you can relate to living life on your own terms. It’s a wonderful thing to have allies who understand! Warmest blessings and thanks so much for stopping by, love Lisa
Here’s to taming our inner critic (s) and taking charge of our lives. I’ve decided that I am a genius, a mad-woman on my own terms! Ha Ha Ha!
thanks Shann, yes it’s awesome to be both really! Let’s celebrate being us 🙂 Namaste and love, Lisa
This post really speaks to me. I haven’t shut down the voice that tells me my dreams and desires are not real but I am taking it a lot less seriously now. Still work in progress.
hi Rachel, it’s great you can lighten up and not take that voice so seriously. We’re all a work in progress but it helps so much to have each other to relate to! Thanks for stopping by, love Lisa
Thank you for this timely piece Lisa. I have listened to the naysayers in my head for years and have learned to listen and trust the voice of my heart. You have reminded me of how far I’ve come…25 rejection letters from publishers to in the last week bestselling author. Trusting my heart is my mantra more than the mantras we hear all around us. Blessings
I love hearing that you’re trusting your heart Debra Reble – keep believing in yourself! Wishing you many successes with your work xx
